THE CNMI Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services will soon conduct fire academy training.
âWere looking to have a total of 36 new recruits, including cadets from Rota and Tinian,â DFEMS Commissioner Dennis Mendiola said.
He said the Tinian and Rota cadets have been waiting to join the 13th cycle fire academy since March 2020 when it was canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mendiola said DFEMS is also working with Northern Marianas College to revisit the memorandum of understanding between the fire department and the educational institution, which provides training to firefighters.
Mendiola said the fire department personnel are currently spread too thin.
ASIDE from hearing the complaints about Imperial Pacific Internationalâs failure to meet its obligations, the Commonwealth Casino Commission also questioned the casino investorâs financial suitability.
During Tuesdayâs evidentiary hearing on Commission Complaints 2020-003, 2020-004 and 2020-005, Commission Chairman Edward C. Deleon Guerrero reminded IPI counsel, Tiberius Mocanu, of the casino law, which requires IPI to be financially suitable.
He also told the IPI attorney that the casino commission has ânot only the authority but an obligation to enforce the requirement of the law.â
Deleon Guerrero likewise informed Mocanu that the Attorney Generalâs Office has provided the commission an opinion defining financial suitability as, among other things, having the ability to pay its vendors.

Cannabis Commission Chairwoman Nadine Deleon Guerrero, in a slide presentation, informed lawmakers that last week, the commission collected a $750 fee for the first Marijuana Producer Class 2 application.
For Class 3 application fee, which costs $1,000 apiece, the commission has already collected $6,000 from six different applicants, Deleon Guerrero said.
In addition, the commission has collected $1,000 in marijuana processor fee; $250 wholesaler license fee; and a total of $6,000 in retailer fees from six different applicants.
