Equal Ballot Access House Bill 2398 would have reduced the petition requirements for new parties. Ranked Choice Voting HB2416/SB1785 would have eliminated the so called “spoiler effect” when there are more than two political parties’ and independent candidates running in a general election.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Most voters across the five boroughs will have their first experience with ranked-choice voting in the upcoming June primaries.
Some local officials have raised concerns about the new system’s rollout, particularly in the city’s Black, Latino, and Asian communities, but proponents say it improves the voting process helping ensure majority support for successful candidates.

With just two months before the first citywide primary where voters will use the new ranked-choice voting ballots, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city is launching a last-minute $15 million dollar spending spree to blanket the airwaves and raise public awareness about the voting system.
In use for the first time this year for city primary and special elections, ranked-choice voting allows people to rank up to five candidates in order of preference. The mayor said the new investment, announced just two days after he presented his “comeback” budget infused with billions in federal stimulus funds, would ensure no voter went to the polls unprepared.
Our special elections in Queens and the Bronx were the first real tests of the new Ranked Choice Voting system in NYC since voters gave it the green light in 2019. We’re grateful to the local Board of Elections workers who made sure every vote was counted (and recounted) and proudly look forward to serving our communities on the City Council.
