ECP reviews LB polls’ preparations

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Thursday reviewed preparations for the local bodies’ elections in the provinces, Islamabad and cantonment boards and noted that the provincial governments still needed months for the purpose, citing various reasons.
In this connection, an important meeting of the Commission was held here at the Election Commission Secretariat under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
Minister for Local Government Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, secretaries Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Election Commission, four provincial election commissioners, secretary Local Government Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Federal Ministry of Home Affairs and relevant officials of the Department of Military Lands and Cantonments attended the meeting.

Although the proposed budget for the 2021-22 fiscal year has seen around 6 percent increase compared to the outgoing budget, allocation for at least 13 ministries and divisions has reduced. Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal placed the budget at the parliament today. The proposed budget is Tk 6,03,681 crore for the 2021-22 FY while it was Tk 5,68,000 in the previous year.

ISLAMABAD: Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja said holding local bodies elections was the constitutional responsibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the cooperation of the governments and departments concerned was vital to carry out this exercise.
Regarding the holding of local bodies’ elections, an important meeting of the ECP was held Wednesday at the Election Commission Secretariat that was chaired by the Chief Election Commissioner. Provincial Election Commissioners of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan participated in the meeting through video link.
In his opening remarks, the Chief Election Commissioner said holding local bodies elections in the country on time was the constitutional responsibility of the ECP and the Election Commission would ensure that local bodies elections were held on time across the country. “The cooperation of governments and other relevant authorities is essential,” he emphasiz
