GOP lawmakers defend election bills

Two Republican senators lashed out Monday at businesses and the media, accusing them of mischaracterizing what is in changes they are proposing to state election laws.
Michelle Ugenti-Rita of Scottsdale and J.D. Mesnard of Chandler said their measures simply add necessary layers of security to the election process. They said the terms of both bills and their motives have been distorted in news coverage.
President Uhuru Kenyatta declares 4 vacancies at IEBC

President Uhuru Kenyatta, in a gazette notice dated April 14, 2021 has officially declared vacancies in the positions of four Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners. The commissioners left office during the last electioneering period.
The four former commissioners are
Former Vice Chairperson Consolata Nkatha
Former Commissioner Margaret Mwachanya
Former Commissioner Roselyn Akombe
The Notice stated in part, “IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by section 7A (2) of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Act. 2011. I. Uhuru Kenyatta, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, declare vacancies in the positions of four members of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.”

In an open letter released Tuesday, five of Bostonâs six mayoral candidates urged the state to relax the signature-gathering requirements to get on the ballot for the 2021 election, citing ongoing risks posed by the pandemic.
âOur ability to campaign for office and access the ballot in a manner consistent with public health is currently undermined by state laws requiring us to collect a high number of âin-personâ signatures in order to appear on ballots in the city of Boston,â said John Barros, City Councilors Andrea Campbell and Annissa Essabi George, acting Mayor Kim Janey and state Rep. John Santiago.
ACU Urges MLB to Correct ‘False Claims’ on Election Reforms and Return Games to Georgia
The American Conservative Union (ACU) is urging Major League Baseball (MLB) to publicly correct recent comments it made against Georgia’s election reform law while moving the All-Star Game to another state.
MLB moved the game and its 2021 draft from Georgia to protest lawmakers passing a new election reform law that was signed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in late March.
“We’re demanding that @MLB correct the lies about conservative election reform and to return the All-Star Game back to Atlanta,” Matt Schlapp, the chairman of the organization, wrote on Twitter, saying “baseball went broke for wokeism.”
