Editor’s Note: For several years, we’ve been discussing how best to feature Selena in our magazine. She is, after all, a legend of Texas music who like Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Bob Wills and Willie Nelson was an extraordinarily influential musician and cultural icon. Remembering her on the 25th anniversary of her death (March 1995) seemed an appropriate way to reflect on her career and impact. Our plan was to feature Selena on the cover of our Spring 2020 issue, which would have been on newsstands in March. COVID prevented publication of that issue, but we’d feel remiss if we didn’t make this piece available to readers as 2020 draws to a close. We hope you enjoy our tribute to the Queen of Tejano.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas â Coastal Bend radio host Dan Pena has dedicated his career to playing Tejano music.
Pena said Tejano music started with instruments like the accordion and the bajo sexto. Over time musicians started adding drums and eventually the keyboard.
Pena said Tejano music is a blend of many genres. Including Spanish, Country and Pop. Adding synthesizers, the organs, the big bands,â said Pena, the Program Director for KSAB, KUNO. You put all that together and that s what you wind up with Tejano Music,â said Pena.

Selena Quintanilla is the
Queen of Tejano Music, her legacy continues to live on as fans and the music community continues to celebrate her. Netflix recently released a series starring
Christian Serratos that premiered December 4th. Fans from all races, backgrounds, and tastes of genres love what Selena brought to the music industry and the person she was in this world.

Selena: The Series, which honors the life of the late singer, played by Christian Serratos. In one scene, we see Quintanilla s iconic white rhinestone bustier. In other, her all-black ensemble takes center stage at the 1986 Tejano Music Awards

Cortázar s design inspiration came from studying Selena s evolving style throughout her career. This outfit is based on an early gig with her band, the Dinos. A fashion icon of her time, she was immortalized for her sexy bras, stones, glitters, big hoop earrings, and red lips, Cortázar says.
