AMA President Dr Omar Khorshid said the AMA was extremely disappointed the House Standing Committee on Environment and Energy has stated Australia’s current approach to reducing emissions is adequate and has recommended against passing new proposed climate change bills.
Dr Khorshid said the proposed legislation, introduced to the House of Representatives last year by Independent MP Zali Steggall, outlined a sensible and well-structured response to the existential threat posed by climate change and included a clear plan for reaching net zero by 2050.
“The bills include provisions for the establishment of an independent Climate Change Commission; a National Climate Risk Assessment; a National Adaptation Program and a net-zero target by 2050,” Dr Khorshid said.

Participants at the EPA s National Adaptation Plans closure meeting
The Executive Director of Liberia Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Prof. Wilson K. Tarpeh has stressed the urgent need to align environment and climate change with Liberia’s development plan, since everything is impacted by climate change.
Speaking at the closure meeting for the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Project on January 13, 2021, Prof Tarpeh said that the inclusion of environment and climate change into the country’s development plan need to be shown and demonstrated because “climate change has massive and compelling effect on everything we do.”
The closure meeting for the UNDP-supported Green Climate Fund (GCF) financed project “To Advance the National Adaptation Plans (NAP) process for medium-term investment planning in climate-sensitive sectors” was held at Bella Casa Hotel in Sinkor.
