Snow to spread across Texas this weekend and then into parts of the South

Snow to spread across Texas this weekend and then into parts of the South Matthew Cappucci, The Washington Post Jan. 8, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail A winter storm is brewing for parts of the South this weekend and early next week, where a hefty dose of snow is set to ride through Texas and perhaps even Louisiana and Mississippi. A plowable snowfall is likely for some, with slick travel along much of the Interstate 20 corridor. Dallas, Shreveport, La., and Jackson, Miss. are all in line for potential impacts. Winter storm watches have already been issued for parts of eastern New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle and Plains. That s where a widespread 4 to 8 inches of snow is likely as early as Saturday night. By Sunday, the system will be rolling east, approaching states along the Gulf Coast.

Here s why meteorologists launch weather balloons every day

Synchronized weather balloon launches have helped meteorologists create forecasts for the past 150 years. Author: Chaffin Mitchell (AccuWeather) Updated: 3:26 PM CST January 7, 2021 Synchronized weather balloon launches have helped meteorologists create forecasts over the past 150 years, and now the old tradition is going high tech. Twice a day - every day of the year - meteorologists around the world launch weather balloons at the same time from roughly 900 locations around the globe. Those balloons often reach heights of 20 miles above Earth or twice as high as planes typically fly. Sensors beam data back down to Earth every few seconds as winds carry the balloons up to 125 miles away. These sensors help collect critical temperature, humidity, wind and atmospheric pressure measurements. Without this information, accurate weather forecasts beyond a few hours would be almost impossible.
