Every May, LSI Foster Care and Adoption celebrates National Foster Care Month. Itâs a time to lift up and thank the dedicated foster families who are wrapping care around Iowa kids.
Each year, we see hundreds of parents attend trainings and classes and take the exciting step of becoming licensed foster families for children in need of a temporary home. They always go above and beyond to support the kids in their care but over the last year, they have shown themselves to be heroes in a time of crisis.
Western Iowa children were referred into foster care 538 times last year. In 273 of those instances, children needed a home that also could care for their siblings, and 136 referrals involved a child over the age of 13.

National Foster Care Month is an initiative led and promoted by the Children’s Bureau of the U.S. Department of Health and Social Services. At this time each year, the Bureau takes the opportunity to acknowledge foster parents, family members, volunteers, mentors, policymakers, child welfare professionals, and other members of the community who work tirelessly to help the more than 423,000 children in foster care across the country to find permanent homes.
While the initiative is national, the focus is local. Delaware residents can find out more about supporting children in foster care by contacting the Division of Family Services at 302.633.2657 or DSCYF FosterCare@delaware.gov.
