Stevens, Kmiecik top NSHS Class of 21 | The Valley Breeze

5/19/2021 Meghan Stevens, left, has been named valedictorian and Ethan Kmiecik the salutatorian. NORTH SMITHFIELD – After a long year for students and staff and a joyful return to four days a week of in-person classes in the spring, Meghan Stevens and Ethan Kmiecik have emerged as the top students for the North Smithfield High School Class of 2021. Stevens, the daughter of Anthony and Kelley Stevens, has been named valedictorian. She plans to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute and pursue a degree in chemical engineering in the fall. Kmiecik, the son of Kris and Monika Kmiecik, has been named salutatorian. He plans to attend Bryant University and study business administration with a concentration in entrepreneurship in the fall.

Introducing The Hawk Eye s Citizen Scholar Class of 2021 The Hawk Eye Each year, The Hawk Eye asks schools in southeast Iowa and west central Illinois to nominate three students for the Bill Mertens Citizen Scholar Award.  While eachnominee is worthy of the Citizen Scholar title, only one from each school can be selected for a chance at a $1,000 scholarship, named for The Hawk Eye s late publisher who established it in 2001, the third year of the Citizen Scholars program. The winner will be announced May 30. The minimum requirement for consideration was a 3.5 grade-point average. Nominees also were expected to demonstrate a four-year career of active engagement in the life of their school and community through participation and leadership in extra-curricular activities, as well as participation in events and organizations beyond their classroom walls in the places where they live.

(HWZOA), is pleased to announce the 2021 winners of its Leaders of Tomorrow Award for Young Women. Sabrina Skolnick, 16, of Atlanta, Ga. will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Israel to participate in the Gesher (formerly Machon) annual summer leadership program of Young Judaea. The oldest Zionist youth movement in the United States, Young Judaea encourages young people to become involved in social and educational activities that sharpen their Jewish and Zionist identity. The Leaders of Tomorrow scholarships are awarded following a merit-based competition. They are given to young women who, because of the leadership roles they have taken on as students, have demonstrated their potential to assume even greater leadership roles as adults, potentially at Hadassah.

Montrose School sophomores win state history competition COURTESY OF THE MONTROSE SCHOOL MEDFIELD Elizabeth Barrett and Elyza Tuan, both Montrose School class of 2023, recently won first place in Senior Group Performance in Massachusetts’ annual National History Day competition, held virtually in April.  “We are excited to have the chance to further improve our performance for nationals and to showcase our research to more people,” Barrett said.  They earned top honors for their history project, “Pageant of Great Suffragettes: The Evolution of Violence as a Means of Communication Toward Progress in Feminism.” Barrett and Tuan now head to the national round, also to be held remotely this year, scheduled for June 13-19. 

MDS Finalist Numbers Top in State for National History Day

By JLNJ Staff | May 13, 2021 After a stellar showing in the National History Day citywide competition, Manhattan Day School eighth graders continued to exhibit their strengths and talents at the state level. MDS had the best showing and placement of all middle schools in New York State with seven finalists and two special awards, including one entry qualifying to compete in the National Competition. The first place state winners were Leah Fishman and Hodaya Greenwald who won for their virtual exhibit board on Sesame Street. The project also won an award for Best First Time Exhibit Board. “We’re really excited that people appreciate the work we did,” said Greenwald. Added Fishman, “We learned a lot from our project and are excited to see it move forward in the competition.”
