Windsor Teacher Nominated For National Award

Reply (Shutterstock) WINDSOR, CT Two Connecticut teachers have been nominated for the National History Day Award for leading their schools in Connecticut History Day. Karen Cook, a teacher at Norwich Free Academy, was nominated for the award in the Senior Division, and Salwa Collings, a teacher at Madina Academy in Windsor, was nominated in the Junior Division. Nominees work must clearly illustrate the development and use of creative teaching methods that engage students in history, and help them make exciting discoveries about the past. They will each receive $500 and are in the running for $10,000. The nominees for the Behring Award have shown a dedication to teaching that goes beyond the classroom, Dr. Cathy Gorn, National History Day Executive Director, said in a statement. These educators are leading examples for their peers and invaluable resources for their students.

Two Carroll High And Two Carroll Middle School Students Move On To National Level Of History Day Competition

Two students from Carroll High School and two from the Carroll Middle School have qualified for the National History Day Contest to be held from Sunday, June 13 to Saturday, June 19 virtually. This is the second year the contests on the local and national level have been moved to a digital format with the state competition having been held from April 15 to April 26 with final results posted on April 30. “National History Day is a challenging program that provides Iowa students opportunities to grow and develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives,” says Susan Klower, administrator of the State Historical Society of Iowa. “We congratulate our national finalists and wish them all the best as they represent our state at the national level.” Sixty-three Iowa students will participate in that national competition, including Madeline Parrott and Sophia Polking from Carroll High, who received top honors in the Senior Group Performance Category with “Communication fro

Campfire and smoking restrictions have commenced on the Gila National Forest in order to protect public health and reduce preventable human-caused fires. According to a release from the Forest Service Gila National Forest, “Fire restrictions for the Gila National Forest include allowing campfires only in designated developed campgrounds and picnic areas and must be in a Forest Service provided metal grill or metal fire pits.  Fires in rock rings will not be allowed.  The use of pressurized, petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns or heating devices are acceptable, provided they meet the fire underwriter’s specifications for safety.  Smoking is limited to a vehicle, building, or three-foot area cleared of all flammable materials.  Fireworks, explosives, and incendiary devices are always prohibited on National Forest System lands.”
