BRAINTREE – The town was hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic during 2020, with more than 2,000 residents infected and over 100 deaths. The pandemic closed everything from schools to South Shore Plaza, canceled events from summer recreation programs to the annual Braintree Day celebration, and generally upended lives throughout the community.
But amid the pandemic, there was one death that shocked the community: Laurie Melchionda s.
The health board member and longtime school nurse was shot to death by a man posing as a delivery driver at her Howie Road home June 17. A former neighbor, Robert Bonang, was arrested within minutes and charged with murder.
More than 1.7 million wreaths were placed on headstones across the nation.
âWe say their name out loud and thank them for their service,â said Kevin Cook, scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 20 in Normal. âItâs an honor to bring our Scouts and have them participate in such a meaningful event.â

âI really think that is special,â said Francis Newbern of Bloomington. âMy grandson was excited to participate and we talked a lot about his grandfather, who is buried here, today.â

COLUMBIA FALLS, Maine On National Wreaths Across America Day Saturday, at 2,557 participating locations, dedicated Americans in every state honored our nation’s heroes by safely placing a total of 1.7 million veterans’ wreaths on their headstones and remembering them, by saying each name out loud.
