Test-takers express safety concerns, fears from in-person bar exam including lack of masks, unclean bathrooms

Following an in-person July bar exam, some North Carolina test-takers claim that public health measures were not handled properly during the administration of the test amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, in Colorado, one bar candidate found out that she tested positive for the novel coronavirus shortly after the exam ended.
According to the National Conference of Bar Examiners, 24 jurisdictions had in-person July exams, and 15 have in-person exams planned for September. The ABA adopted a resolution Aug. 4 urging state courts of last resort to postpone in-person bar exams during the COVID-19 pandemic and develop alternate plans to license candidates.

New York and Illinois join others moving to October online bar exam; another jurisdiction grants diploma privilege

In light of public health concerns, Illinois and New York have joined the growing list of states that canceled in-person bar exams, with plans for an October remote test offered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
Ohio and New Hampshire made similar announcements Wednesday, as did Tennessee, Massachusetts and New Jersey during the month of July. Washington, D.C. and Maryland are also offering the NCBE October exam, which the jurisdictions announced in June.
Additionally, Louisiana announced on Wednesday that the state would be offering diploma privilege for candidates who graduated from an ABA-accredited law school no earlier than December 2019.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Delaware Bar Examination will be administered remotely online, according to the Delaware Board of Bar Examiners.
The Delaware bar examination, which will take place over three days on July 26-28, 2021, will use the remote (online) format offered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE). The exam will retain the traditional format of eight Delaware essay questions, two Multistate Performance Test (MPT) questions, and 200 Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) questions. However, unlike in past years, applicants will take all three segments of the exam online using ExamSoft secure remote testing software.
The Board has continued to monitor closely the most recent information from health authorities, including projections regarding the pandemic and the ongoing need for restrictions on in-person gatherings.
