A Carrick-on-Shannon woman has launched a fundraising walk just one year after the extraordinary story of the birth of her daughter Sarah that entailed a 240 Km dash to Dublin, a ten week stay in a Dublin hospital, an emergency section and all with the background of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The demand for homebirths has gone up by more than a third during the pandemic, as many women opt to avoid hospitals.
The National Homebirth Service numbers increased from 272 in 2019 to 354 last year, across all HSE regions.
Some regions saw noticeable increases including Mid-Leinster, up from 65 to 107, and HSE West, from 22 to 37.
Cork and Kerry was the busiest region in both years with 127 (2019) and 129 (2020) women registered for a homebirth.

Disabled women are having issues accessing basic health services, including vital cancer screening, the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters heard on Tuesday.
Selina Bonnie, vice-chairwoman of the Independent Living Movement Ireland, told the committee that many disabled women’s specific access needs are not addressed when availing of CervicalCheck or BreastCheck.
“Depending on the equipment available in individual GP surgeries, and the location of colposcopy clinics, many disabled women are faced with significant travel to access services that meet their individual support needs,” she said in her opening statement.
Future of Midwifery Led Unit at Cavan hospital secure

The INMO has stated today (Friday) that it welcomes the recent recommendations of the review of Maternity services and the Maternity Led Unit (MLU) in Cavan General Hospital (CGH), but that implementation must be carried out within the planned timeframe.
The review was committed to by then Minister for Health Minister Harris when he met with INMO midwife members on the issue on June 12, 2020. It was then established by the RCSI hospital group and undertaken by a working group that included midwifery staff both internal and external to CGH, and which made the following recommendations:
