THE number of people getting tested for Covid-19 in Limerick has more than doubled in the space of a week as fears grow over the latest surge.
This Tuesday, the HSE confirmed that 1,088 people had been tested for Covid-19 at venues across the city on Monday alone - compared to around 500 on Monday of last week.
The demand at the main test centre on the Ballysimon Road was so extreme this Monday that it had to close an hour early, due to the number of people turning up.

Traffic is chaotic at a growing Portarlington school according to a councillor who wants a strip of a large site nearby to be used so parents can safely drop their children to school.
Cllr Aidan Mullins raised issues with Sandy Lane National School at the Portarlington Graiguecullen Municipal District meeting. He called on Laois County Council to progress the acquisition of land for a parking area for school buses and cars.
In a written reply, Mr Adrian Barrett, Senior Engineer, outlined the council’s approach.
“A new dropping-off lay-by opposite the primary school on Sandy Lane was included in planning permission (09/357) which was previously granted for a development on the private land opposite the school. This planning application is expired since 28/06/2020.

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Concerns have been raised over the prioritised route selection process and the timeline for the rollout of the planned city cycle network.
Several councillors raised issues regarding the planned cycling infrastructure at last evening’s meeting of the city council.
During a discussion on the April and May Chief Executive’s reports, several councillors voiced concerns regarding the proposed cycle network plan.
The May CE report outlines that route option selection reports have been issued to the National Transport Authority for the initial phases of the plan at Ballyloughane Road, Doughiska Road South, Eglinton Canal, Clybaun Road, and Bóthar Stíofain.

BUS Éireann has introduced a new shuttle bus service between Limerick city and the Covid-19 vaccination centre at the Radisson Blu Hotel.
The special service, for those with appointments, will run every 20 minutes in line with the operating hours of the vaccination centre.
The first bus will depart Colbert Station at 7.40am and the last bus will returns from the Hotel at 8.10pm. Stops to be served by the shuttle bus include Henry Street (Dunnes Stores), Ennis Road (JFK School and Jetland) and Coonagh Roundabout.
