My educational trek featured a UMass poetry class. It was a jittery leap. The presiding poet was from Kashmir, and my classmates half the age of yours truly.
A welcoming Shahid Ali wrote the King’s English with a clarity we could only aspire to. I’d written poetry for years, but taking an Master of Fine Arts workshop was a dream. My assignment: Bring a new poem each week; read it to be critiqued by peers and professor. It’s said, humility is a virtue that defeats the sin of pride. I learned my lesson.

Try out for a musical
Falmouth Theatre Guild will hold in-person auditions from 6 to 9 p.m. May 19 and 20, and 2 to 5 p.m. May 22 for the lead roles in its planned fall production of the musical
“Carousel.” Individual try-outs will be held at Highfield Theater, 58 Highfield Dr., Falmouth.
The show is due to run Oct. 22 to Nov. 7, and all involved with the production will be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. While other auditions will be in August, the five leads in this romance are being cast early so actors will have months of access to rehearsal tracks and there can be summer work with the director.
NEW BEDFORD The young Shakespeares of Hayden-McFadden Elementary School participated in a virtual poetry slam on April 29.
Fifth-grade teacher Alyssa Baldwin received 21 poems from students grades 3 through 5 along with hand-drawn artwork. Upper Academy Assistant Principal Amy Huston and Baldwin organized the poetry slam with a total of 12 students presenting their work to classmates and teachers.
Students were given the option to opt in, and more students showed a passion for poetry and writing and came out of the woodwork, Baldwin said. They did an amazing job, Principal Tammy Morgan said.
Baldwin warmed up the students with an icebreaker tactic: the banana dance. She got the students moving and grooving as a silly way to shake off stage fright jitters.
