QUARLES … “Clearly, there’s going to be political influence at play, but, I mean, I think it’s pretty obvious that Secretary Vilsack, U.S. Trade Representative, Ambassador Tai, they’re really engaged in this issue. They know it very well and I think they’re going to want to get a win here because this issue is, even though it’s been kind of embroiled in a ton of politics, it’s easy to solve.”

Monday May 3rd, 2021 I’m Bob Larson. Fresh U.S. potatoes could soon be headed to Mexico. This after Mexico’s Supreme Court’s ruling last week that gives its government the authority to allow the import of U.S. spuds, following obligations under the USMCA.

QUARLES … “Countries can’t say, we’re going to shut of trade when competition gets too inconvenient. The point is that you want to provide consumers with a choice. You want to have that healthy competition in a variety of different goods.”
WASHINGTON â The Mexican Supreme Court ruled by a unanimous vote of five to zero on Wednesday in favor of overturning a 2017 lower court decision that prevented the Mexican federal government from implementing regulations to allow for the importation of fresh U.S. potatoes throughout the country.
The ruling, cheered by the National Potato Council and Potatoes USA, marks the end of a decade-long legal process that began when Mexicoâs potato industry sued its government to prevent competition from imports.
âThis ruling is consistent with Mexicoâs obligations under the USMCA and the WTO.
