Taiwan COVID vaccine maker says it had wanted to do stage 3 trials

Taipei, June 3 (CNA) United Biomedical, a Taiwan biopharmaceutical firm developing COVID-19 vaccines, on Thursday said it had initially planned on following international norm and entering phase 3 clinical trials before seeking government approval for its COVID-19 vaccine.
In response to public concerns that United Biomedical s vaccines could be launched without going through phase-three clinical trials, the company s Chief Operating Officer (COO) Peng Wen-jiun (彭文君) said at a forum that the company had initially planned on following through the international norm, but Taiwan s Center for Drug Evaluation (CDE) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suggested that the company increase the number of participants to a larger-than-normal scale in the second phase of clinical trials instead.
The government should give cash to people who are struggling amid a COVID-19 outbreak in Taiwan, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Johnny Chiang (江啟臣) said yesterday.
Chiang made the remarks at a virtual meeting on COVID-19 prevention and relief joined by the heads of several city and county governments run by the KMT, including Hsinchu County Commissioner Yang Wen-ke (楊文科), Miaoli County Commissioner Hsu Yao-chang (徐耀昌) and Changhua County Commissioner Wang Hui-mei (王惠美).

Report calls for covering 5-year-olds in compulsory education

Taipei, May 16 (CNA) The Ministry of Education should push for the coverage of 5-year-old children in Taiwan s compulsory education system, according to a recent report by a legislative research body.
Investing in young children is investing in the country s future, especially when Taiwan faces a low birth rate, said the report published by the Legislature s Organic Laws and Statutes Bureau on Tuesday.
In 2020, Taiwan recorded more deaths than newborns for the first time on record.
The report was compiled after the National Policy Foundation made a similar call in April over the issue, suggesting that expanding the coverage will improve the quality of education for children at that age.
