Finger Lakes could become the country s next national heritage area

Ithaca Journal The National Park Service invites public input on a feasibility study that will be used to determine whether the Finger Lakes region could become a national heritage area. The comment period for the Finger Lakes National Heritage Area Feasibility Study started Monday and will end on June 1. More information about the study is available at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/FingerLakes.

Iowa History Month: The Legacy of Tama Jim Wilson Candy Streed-Welch, Special to the Register © State Historical Society of Iowa, Des Moines James “Tama Jim” Wilson, pictured here around 1870, served as an Iowa Congressman and the fourth U.S. Secretary of Agriculture. With Tom Vilsack’s return as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and the 25th anniversary of the Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area, we recognize Iowans’ unprecedented leadership in American agriculture. Wallace and Henry A. Wallace, and Tom Vilsack have shaped policies for agriculture, conservation, rural life, food and nutrition programs, and much more.

The designation would unlock federal funding and raise awareness of the area, which includes two states, four Ojibwe tribes, 18 counties and 114 separate zip codes. Portions of Douglas County, including Gordon, Wascott and Dairyland, are included.
