Arizona officials kick off National Safe Boating Week
This week is National Safe Boating Week, and Arizona officials are asking people to stay safe while out in the water. FOX 10 s Ty Brennan reports.
PHOENIX - Memorial Day is next week, the unofficial start to summer and a time where plenty of residents come out to enjoy the Arizona lakes. It s going to be busy, there s going to be a lot of boaters, the ramps are going to be busy, said Josh Hoffman, boating safety coordinator for Arizona Game and Fish.

Safeboatingcampaign.com gives information regarding boating accidents as a part of National Safe Boating Week.
1. What is the leading cause of death in boating accidents?Â
Drowning was reported as the cause of death in 79% of all boating fatalities with 86 percent of those who drowned were not wearing a life jacket.Â
2. What was the leading factor in fatal boating accidents?Â
Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. Where the primary cause was known, alcohol was listed as the leading factor in 23 percent of deaths.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Saturday, Mar. 22 was the start of National Safe Boating Week.
Led by the National Safe Boating Council, the purpose of the campaign is to educate boaters and passengers on how to keep themselves safe while enjoying a day on the boat.
The campaign mainly focuses on the importance of wearing a life jacket. Drowning is the leading cause of boating fatalities, accounting for 79% of all boating-related deaths, according to Coast Guard statistics. Of that, 86% of victims were not wearing a life jacket when they drowned.
