ISLAMABAD: An inquiry committee of the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) has identified governance, ownership problems and poor chain of command for countrywide power breakdown early this year, but has absolved its own team of any responsibility.
In its report, the four-member inquiry committee also quoted letters written by some of its members for improvement of the electricity generation system and its safety protocols and equipment to prove that the NTDC had been highlighting the system’s weaknesses.

ISLAMABAD: An independent inquiry committee has found serious violations of safety and security protocols and severe deficiencies in the country’s power system operations starting from generation facilities both in public and private sector to the entire transmission network including the K-Electric (KE) that resulted in a prolonged power breakdown early last month.
The 24-page inquiry report “Total Power System Collapse on January 9, 2021” of the three-member independent inquiry committee appointed by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) also observed that “black start operations at most of the power plants were non-existent or non-functional which should have restored the power supply quite quickly in the country”.

LAHORE: The government has directed power distribution companies to make sure uninterrupted supply to the industrial units that have been disallowed to use gas for electricity generation, it was learnt on Tuesday.
The ministry of energy, in a letter, asked the power distribution companies (Discos) to ensure that they meet electricity demand due to discontinuation of gas supply to the captive power plants of non-export industry from February 1. Export industry can use gas for power production till 15 March.
“CEOs of the Discos will ensure the continuity of supply to the captive power consumers during the period of closure of gas supply. If required, the Discos shall ensure timely arrangements to supply the requisite power to the captive power consumers and also to those requiring enhancement in the sanctioned load by revising the sanctioned load and infrastructure immediately under rules,” the ministry s

ISLAMABAD: A report outlining the reasons for the recent electricity blackout in the country has been submitted to the Power Division.
According to Geo News, the report was submitted by the National Power Control Centre, stating that on January 09 at 11:41pm, the 500KV Guddu-Shikarpur transmission line’s circuits 1 and 2 tripped. As a result, the 500KV Guddu-Muzaffargarh and Guddu-Dera Ghazi Khan transmission lines also tripped, causing the entire power system to shut down. As per the report, before the blackout, the frequency of the system was 49.85 and it was generating a total of 10,311MW electricity, of which 1,257MW was being generated from water, 983MW was generated through the government’s thermal power plants, while 8,070MW electricity was coming from independent power producers (IPPs).
