Rankings data row fuels push to oust university leader
Faculty members at the University of Tsukuba, a leading higher education institution in Japan, have launched a campaign against the re-appointment of its president, Kyosuke Nagata. Their action, they said, is aimed at protecting democracy and transparency in Japan’s university governance.
Faculty members claim that the university, under Nagata’s leadership, misreported data on international student numbers at the university in an alleged bid to increase the university’s rank in
Times Higher Education’s global university rankings over the past two years.
They further allege that he used inaccurate information on foreign students to apply to the education ministry for the university to be designated a ‘National University’, a prestigious title in Japan, which in turn may have helped in his bid to remain president of the university, despite strong faculty opposition during the selection process.
