KARACHI: The Sindh Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has in collaboration with Community World Service Asia held a consultation and awareness workshop on the Sindh Hindu Marriage Amendment Act-2016 here.
As not many may know, marriage registration for Hindus living in Pakistan was a big problem. In fact, before 2016, the Hindu population was deprived of marital rights, which were then granted to them through the Sindh Hindu Marriage Act.
Sindh holds the distinction of being the first and the only province to legislate on the issue followed by a similar law enacted by the National Assembly one year later.

Sikh community leaders are celebrating after Gurdeep Singh became the first Sikh to win election to Pakistan’s Senate.
Singh received 105 votes on March 3 to be elected to the upper house of parliament on a minority ticket. Senate members are elected for six-year terms.
Shahbaz Bhatti, the Catholic federal minister for minorities who was assassinated in March 2011, won approval for four Senate seats to be reserved for religious minorities.

A Muslim cleric and a colleague of a Christian nurse attacked by a mob following blasphemy allegations have called on their social media followers to protect minorities.
A day after Tabitha Nazir Gill was slapped and stripped at Sobhraj Maternity Hospital in Karachi, cleric Maulana Tahir urged authorities to protect religious minorities.
“It is with great grief I request Prime Minister Imran Khan and state leaders to take notice. The police investigation proved that she didn’t commit blasphemy,” he stated in a Jan. 29 video message on Facebook.

Wailing women gathered around trying to comfort her at the Jan. 7 funeral in Makhan Colony, home to more than 500 Christians, in Lahore.
“Their faces were beyond recognition. I couldn’t see them for the last time. In dreams I see them agonizing in pain. I can’t tolerate this,” Bibi told UCA News.
