Despite the potentially huge contributions that coastal communities might make in marine resource management and sustainability, their participation in such efforts have only been recognized recently, particularly in Southeast Asia. Involving community perceptions can offer new insights for policy makers and resource managers and can elicit strong commitment and support from the communities themselves. This paper aims to understand perceptions of coastal communities of local environmental issues, specifically how these have developed over time, to understand expectations and perceptions of trends. Sixteen marine environmental issues were identified during stakeholder meetings in Palawan, Philippines. A co-developed survey was administered to 431 respondents from coastal communities in two municipalities (Taytay and Aborlan) and the city of Puerto Princesa in Palawan. At least three provinces, including Binh Duong, Khanh Hoa and Dong Thap, said they want to participate in the trial phase of the locally-made Covid-19 vaccine Nanocovax.

Due to the rapid increase in the number of Covid-19 cases while supply of vaccines is limited, the southern province of Binh Duong – a pandemic hotspot - has asked for the Ministry of Health’s approval for its participation in the pilot vaccination of Made-in-Vietnam Nanocovax vaccine.

Gov’t pushes to okay Vietnam jab for emergency use

The Vietnamese health ministry on August 2 asked Ho Chi Minh City-based biopharmaceutical company Nanogen, developer of the Covid-19 vaccine Nano Covax, to submit results of Phase II and initial Phase III trials to be reviewed for emergency approval.
Deputy minister Tran Van Thuan, leader of the ministry’s special task force on clinical trials and development of Covid-19 vaccines, made the request during a progress meeting with experts, as the country deals with a severe fourth wave of infections while vaccine supply is still limited amid a global shortage.
