LANDIKOTAL: Awami Muslim League (AML) Khyber district president Malik Kashif Kokikhel on Friday said that parliamentarians from the district had failed to address the longstanding issues being faced by the residents.
Addressing a Meet the Press Programme at Landikotal Press Club, he said that they supported the erstwhile Fata merger, which was a long-awaited dream of tribal people but added that a group of people opposed it for their vested interests.
Malik Kashif said they have several historical sites in district Khyber which should be opened for tourists. He demanded the government to rehabilitate the damaged Peshawar-Torkham railway track, which would encourage tourists to visit Khyber.

ISLAMABAD: Former Senate chairman Senator Mian Raza Rabbani Monday moved a bill in the Senate, seeking massive empowerment of the Upper House of the Parliament, for which a series of resolutions were already adopted with consensus in the last few years.
The proposed law seeks extensive powers for the Senate through amendments in a number of articles of the Constitution. Sparing a few amendments, the government did not oppose the move and allowed to be referred to the House standing committee concerned for deliberations and report. The bill envisages effectively enforcement of participatory federalism, ensuring provincial autonomy and providing a meaningful participation to the provinces and other territories in the Federation.

Punjab s eight-month agriculture income tax collection stands at Rs1.54 billion. File photo
LAHORE: Punjab’s collection of agriculture income tax (AIT) has increased by slightly over 50 per cent to Rs2.1 billion from Rs1.4bn in the last five years but remains far below the province’s estimated potential and unable to become a major revenue generation source for the government.
A study, done a few years back by Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives researcher Anjum Nasim, had estimated that the agriculture sector had a tax revenue potential of Rs55-75bn from crop farming and land rental in the tax year 2010. The paper, using a more limited data set to project taxable income and using the tax rates applicable under the Finance Act 2012, had shown that the tax potential for the tax year 2013 was about Rs 30bn.
