Lt Gen Emmanuel Erskine (Rtd) passes on

Family sources confirmed the death of the man who was the first commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) from 1978 to 1981. He was also a former Chief of Army Staff of the Ghana Army and commanded the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon He had his training at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and also attended the Staff College, Camberley in England. Lt. Gen. Erskine was one of the founding members of the People s Heritage Party (PHP).

Ghana Loses Lt Gen Erskine

  Lieutenant General Emmanuel Alexander Erskine (Retired), one of Ghana’s celebrated military officers, has passed on at the age of 86. In 1978, Lt. Gen. Erskine was appointed the first Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which was established that year to confirm Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, restore international peace and security and assist the Lebanese Government in restoring its effective authority in the area. This was preceded by his appointment as Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization in Palestine (UNTSO) on 1st January 1976 to April 1978. On the 40th Anniversary of UNIFIL in 2018, the Ghana Armed Forces honoured Lt. Gen. Erskine, who led the body till 1986, for his distinguished service.

He is the former head of the Lake Chad Basin programme in the Dakar office. He joined the ISS in 2017 as a senior researcher in the Peace and Security Research Programme in Pretoria, South Africa after which he moved to ISS Dakar as a senior researcher. Before joining the ISS he worked for the United States Department of Defense, the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa, and the Africa Program of the United Nations University for Peace. [Photo: PC] Libya’s presidential council yesterday announced launching the National Reconciliation Commission which will serve to establish social peace. The head of the council Mohammed Al-Menfi stated during a press conference in the capital Tripoli, that the commission would establish justice among Libyans and create solidarity in the country. Al-Menfi did not provide further details on the structure or the activities of the commission.
