DepEd teams up with DICT to roll out Public Education Network

Published April 19, 2021, 3:36 PM In order to realize the establishment of the Public Education Network (PEN) in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) has partnered with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to respond to the challenges in the education landscape. Education Secretary Leonor Briones confirmed this during the briefing of Palace Spokesman Harry Roque on Monday, April 19. With the shift into distance learning amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, underscored the “need to use technology” for learning continuity and education. Last week, DepEd led by Briones and DICT led by Secretary Gregorio Honasan II also signed two important Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to strengthen the delivery of education through broadcast, connectivity, and digital security via the PEN program.

PH fixed broadband internet speed continues to surge in March

SunStar + April 18, 2021 THE Philippines’ fixed broadband average download speed continued its surge for March 2021, according to the Ookla Speedtest Global Index report. The country registered 7.79 Mbps, or a 20.25 percent increase in speed from the recorded 38.46 Mbps in February, jumping to 46.25 Mbps for this month. “The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) shall continue to support and monitor the performance of telecommunications companies (telcos) and internet service providers (ISPs) to ensure their intensified efforts to improve internet service performance this year,” Secretary Gregorio Honasan II said. The March 2021 fixed broadband average download speed increase is the highest jump since President Rodrigo Duterte assumed office.

SIM card registration pushed in the Philippines to block fake bookings

CLARK, PAMPANGA: Mobile phone scams and terror bomb blasts are not uncommon in the Philippines, thanks in part to the ease with which unregistered pre-paid mobile phone SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) cards can be bought and sold. Legislations mandating SIM card registrations have been proposed but nothing came out of them, bogged down in the legislative mill. But there s a rising clamour for its passage, this time for quite a different reason. Now, the Philippines’ Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is pushing for mandatory SIM card registration  already practised in most countries apparently to combat the increasing incidents of fake bookings through delivery apps.

Nalzaro: Dito cellular tower opposed

SunStar + April 16, 2021 SOME residents of Sitio Villa Manga in Bulacao Pardo, Cebu City are up in arms against the construction of a Dito telecommunication tower in their area, citing physical hazard, safety and national security reasons. Dito telecommunication, the new and third major player in the country’s telecommunication industry, is a consortium between Davaobased business tycoon Dennis Uy and China Telecom. Known as Dito Telecommunity Corp., formerly known as Mindanao Islamic Telephone Company, the new telecom company has been granted a congressional franchise to operate and engage in the business of multi-media and information technology. It started operating last month.
