May 28 Juneteenth will now be a free day at Washington state parks.
The day which falls on June 19 and is also known as Emancipation Day and Freedom Day commemorates the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 and informed the last enslaved African Americans there that they were free.
“The new designation reflects a commitment among state lands agencies to promote diversity, equity and inclusion as core values,” Washington State Parks and Recreation said in a news release.
Other free days next month include: June 5 for National Trails Day, June 12 for National Get Outdoors Day and June 13 for Free Fishing Weekend.

LHT Saturday Morning Walking Club to Reconvene on National Trails Day, June 5 May 25, 2021
LAWRENCE, N.J. The Lawrence Hopewell Trail s Saturday Morning Walking Club will reconvene for its first group walk since last fall on Saturday, June 5, at Village Park in Lawrence Township. While the club traditionally gets together on the second Saturday of each month, June 5 is National Trails Day this year, so a switch to the first Saturday will allow the walkers to celebrate even more than emerging out of the coronavirus shutdown!

Des Moines County supervisors ended their Tuesday meeting with department heads by discussing the feasibility of removing the basement-entry restriction that has been in place at the courthouse since last year.
The courthouse front doors were closed last March to entry from Main Street.
Supervisor Jim Cary led off the discussion by saying the county should follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines in re-opening the lobby.
Courthouse maintenance supervisor Rodney Bliesener said people have been inquiring about re-opening the lobby and asked those attending the meeting what they thought about opening the front doors to entry again.
