Biodiversity Day: Rehabilitation Of Eroded Watercourses At Vergelegen

iAfrica Image: supplied Share with your network! Vergelegen wine estate in Somerset West, which is renowned for its biodiversity and commitment to environmental sustainability, has just completed an extensive programme to rehabilitate eroded watercourses. This complex environmental undertaking on five sites has seen the removal, storage and replanting of some 15000 indigenous plants that were housed temporarily while the programme was underway. The R12 million project has saved rehabilitated wetlands and Lourensford Alluvium Fynbos vegetation, which could have been badly affected by sediment washing onto the area. In addition, it has halted sediment  contamination of the Lourens River, part of which runs through the estate.  This is the only river in South Africa where a section of adjoining land is a  Protected Natural Environment.

Green exemption fixer Hantie Plomp faces miscondu

Hantie Plomp, the South African environmental consultant who helped Turkish company Karpowership procure a “Covid-19 exemption” permit for its controversial gas powerships plan, is facing disciplinary charges for alleged professional misconduct. Before establishing her environmental consultancy business, Triplo4 Sustainable Solutions, Hantie Plomp worked as an environmental manager for AngloGold Ashanti. She studied analytical chemistry at Pretoria Technikon and later graduated with a Masters degree (Cum Laude) in Environmental Management from the University of the Free State. (Photo: riverhorsevalley.co.za) The exemption permit would have allowed the company to bypass a mandatory environmental impact assessment (EIA) and public participation process, based on the claim that gas-burning Turkish powerships would somehow help to save lives at the height of the Covid pandemic and electricity crisis.

Public participation is a farce in Musina-Makhado project

Public participation is a farce in Musina-Makhado project Information is not getting to the right people or places as voices of discontent are getting louder After three public participation rounds in September and October 2020 and in January 2021 it is hard to imagine that the directive for more thorough public participation on the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for the proposed Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone could go wrong again. Yet, last week, the meetings exploded as people vented their frustration about inadequate information on the zone. Ironically, South Africa’s legislation on inclusion is the best in the world, especially on issues of sustainable development and the environment. The National Environmental Management Act (Nema) is inspired by international best practice on participatory sustainable development.
