Mupfumira Arrest Warrant Cancelled - NewZimbabwe com

By Mary Taruvinga FORMER cabinet minister, Prisca Mupfumira was mistakenly issued with an arrest warrant following confusion over her remand dates which were changed as a result of the imposition of a national lockdown. The court heard new practice directives issued were confusing to many suspects and witnesses. Harare magistrate, Trynos Utawashe who was presiding over Mupfumira’s case admitted that the amended version of practice directive did not have remand dates. Utahwashe cancelled Mupfumira’s arrest warrant. Mupfumira is jointly charged with former National Social Security Authority (NSSA) former contribution and collections officer, Barnabas Matongera. The two are now expected to stand trial on May 5, 2021.

Foreign direct investment dries up

DUMISANI NYONI According to a Monetary Policy Statement released by Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor John Mangudya last week, foreign investment declined from US$53.47 million to US$40.06 million in 2020 while international and diaspora remittances increased by 57.6% to US$1.002 billion. Loan proceeds registered 42.5% growth to US$845.21 million whereas income receipts and non-governmental organisations contributed US$56.85 million and US$647.75 million, respectively. In total, foreign currency receipts for 2020 increased by 14.9% to US$6.288 billion. Economic analysts attributed the decline in foreign investment to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic which heightened the risks. “The decline in foreign investment is because of the risks associated with the Covid-19. No one was actually going to be investing. But already the crisis before was associated with declining foreign direct investment (FDI),” economic analyst Godfrey Kanyenze said.

ZCTU no longer deserves a seat on NSSA board: Charamba

THE Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) could lose its representation on the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) board as it emerges that the highly politicized labour grouping no longer commands a considerable workforce due to structural transformation of the Zimbabwean economy. Deliberate government policy to grow the informal sector over the past years, coupled with Western sanctions have killed ZCTU’s key source of membership. ZCTU, which birthed the Morgan Tsvangirai-led MDC in 1999, draws its membership mainly from the formal sector, of which the biggest component now is Government, whose employees are under the Apex Council. It is a statutory requirement that there be a tripartite representation on the board, comprising government, business and labour. Apart from the ZCTU, other labour unions with representatives on the NSSA board are the Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Unions (ZFTU) and the Apex Council, which represents civil servants.
