Is coffee leading to high cholesterol?

For millions of Americans, a daily cup of coffee is a familiar routine. Whether it’s black, iced, cold brew or the latest coffee shop concoction, it’s something many people rely on for a needed caffeine boost. In fact, 7 in 10 Americans drink coffee every week; 62% drink coffee every day, according to the 2020 National Coffee Association survey. However, recent studies have found America’s coffee habit could have potential unhealthy consequences when it comes to cholesterol. “Although most have been small studies, they’ve produced enough data to show that coffee consumption can indeed increase cholesterol,” said Dr. Harjit Chahal, a cardiologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Organizations partner to create fair-pricing model for coffee growers

Dive Brief: Commercial coffee roaster Bellweather Coffee, global development organization Heifer International and specialty coffee importer Sustainable Harvest have launched a new pricing model for the commodity called Verified Living Income, according to a press release.  The program helps farmers determine the price they need to receive for their coffee to earn a living wage. Its goal is to equalize power dynamics between buyers and producers, evolve procurement practices to address sustainability and increase cooperation throughout the supply chain. There is a growing effort across the industry to provide greater support and transparency for coffee farmers, which often receive little to no profit for their crops.

How to Store Coffee to Keep It Fresh

Gray Kotze/iStock via Getty Images Coffee aficionados have strong opinions about every aspect of the product, including how to store it. You may have heard that sticking ground coffee or whole beans in the freezer is the best way to preserve the coffee’s flavor. Though it is true that coffee goes stale quickly when not stored properly, freezing it can sometimes do more harm than good. According to the National Coffee Association, the best thing you can do for your coffee is store it in an airtight container. Ground coffee loses freshness faster than whole beans because it has more surface area that s exposed to oxygen. Whole beans also start to lose freshness almost as soon as they re done roasting, so they benefit from proper storage as well.
