Disparities in Covid-19 vaccination rates among US counties fall along digital and economic divide

Updated 12:21 PM ET, Fri May 28, 2021 (CNN)More than 40% of the US population is now fully vaccinated against Covid-19, but many in the remaining 60% still face critical barriers to health care access that make it harder for even those who want the vaccine to get it.
Counties that are lagging behind the overall Covid-19 vaccination rate in the US tend to be poorer and less educated, with less access to computers and the internet, a CNN analysis of federal data has found.
This digital and economic divide contributes to disparities in health care access generally, experts say, and access to Covid-19 vaccines is no exception.

People in Fairbanks, Alaska’s second-largest city, have embraced a return to normalcy. Alaska made national headlines in March as the first state to make vaccines available to any adult, and as the snow melted into a long-awaited spring, restaurants were packed, church pews were full, and schools reopened for in-person classes.
Yet signs of trouble became apparent before the trees had even budded. Demand for vaccinations swiftly plateaued; in early April, clinics could no longer fill their appointments. In the last two weeks of April, COVID-19 cases in the Fairbanks North Star Borough rose by 253 percent, and test positivity rates doubled to more than 10 percent.
