NEWSDAY columnist Debbie Jacob has lived and worked in TT for more than 30 years. She has been unsuccessfully applying for citizenship for almost the same length of time.
Since moving here in 1984 from Seattle, Washington, Jacob has worked as a feature writer or columnist for all three daily newspapers. She came to Trinidad to “see if there really was a place like the one featured in VS Naipaul’s novel Miguel Street,” and fell in love with the country.
She founded the Middle and High School English department at the International School of Port of Spain in 1995, and eventually became head librarian there.

The Bahamas has avoided the worst-case scenario of its economy shrinking by 26 percent in 2020 thanks to the global oil price slump and government s policy response, a report has concluded.
The Inter-American Development Bank s (IDB) Caribbean Quarterly Bulletin for the three months to end-December said the contraction in The Bahamas economic output was not as dire as first anticipated as it now forecast a 14.8 percent decline in gross domestic product (GDP). The worst-case scenarios of the simulations from March 2020... showed that the impact on the economy of The Bahamas, for example, could be as bad as 26 percentage points’ lower growth than if there had been no tourism shock, the report said.

After familiarizing myself with the late, incredibly verbose and sometimes misaligned Fiscal Strategy Report, I have yet to identify a clear strategy for economic growth – which is what the government should be primarily focusing on at this time.
What I do see is an administration that once again runs to impose additional taxes on the Bahamian people and further starve capital works that could spur the economy.
The administration that railed against value-added tax then raised it, is now looking to a legalized gaming industry it opposed to shore up its fiscal position.

NASSAU, BAHAMAS Opposition Shadow Finance Minister Chester Cooper yesterday asserted that the government has yet to identify a clear strategy for economic growth, while slamming many of the forecasts in the recently released Fiscal Strategy Report (FSR) as “fanciful”.
Cooper, in a statement on the FSR that was tabled in Parliament on Wednesday, said: “I have yet to identify a clear strategy for economic growth which is what the government should primarily be focusing on at this time.”
He added: “What I do see is an administration that once again runs to impose additional taxes on the Bahamian people and further starve capital works that could spur the economy.
