In November 2019, the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) named March 14, of every year as the International Day of Mathematics.
This was in recognition of the central role Mathematics has in our lives. Prior to that, the day had been celebrated as World Pi Day, after the famous mathematical constant, the first three digits of which are 3.14.
In the American rendering, 3.14 is March 14, hence the choice of that date.
The date also has great significance for two of the most celebrated figures in science. On March 14, 1879, Albert Einstein was born.
Just 26 years later, the publication of his Annus Mirabilis papers changed physics and altered how we conceive light, matter, time and space.

Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan came from a very modest background. Yet he was a mathematical genius in his own right. His father worked a day job while his mother was a housewife. However, he was born in a high-caste Brahmin Hindu family on December 22, 1887, in Erode, South India (today Tamil Nadu). It was during the time of the British Raj, which, as the world knows, lasted from 1857-1947. Srinivasa Ramanujan did not have any formal training in pure mathematics. Whatever he achieved was through his exceptional genius in the subject. In fact, his contributions “to mathematical analysis, number theories, infinite series and continued fractions including solutions to mathematical problems then considered unsolvable” are considered phenomenal for someone who never had any forma

A five-day science fair is being organised by Dharwad Regional Science Centre (DRSC) on the campus of Karnatak University campus in Dharwad.
The fair will be held from Friday to March 2 and a series of events have been scheduled in which senior scientists and technocracts from across the country will participate and deliver talks.
According to director of DRSC Veeranna Bolishetty, as the event is being held to mark ‘National Science and National Mathematics Day’ the focus will be on management of e-waste, biotechnology and nano-technology, popularising solar energy, among others.
During the event, Keshav Bulbule from Hyderabad will deliver a special talk on e-waste management, Director of Sun Ray Solar Museum V.S. Mahesh will speak on on innovations in solar energy, its usefulness. There will be a workshop for mathematics teachers on Euclid Geometry by T.K. Prasannamurthy and learning geometry through origami.
Mrs. Patty Assan, the Director of Schools and Instructions, has urged students to constantly practice mathematics to eliminate the perceived fear associated with the subject. My dear learners, solving one mathematics problem a day keeps you closer to loving Mathematics, she said.
Mrs Assan, speaking at an event to commemorate the National Mathematics Day in Accra said both the teacher factor and the learner factor were the two main areas to consider if we needed to deal with this phobia.
This year s event, which was held virtually was on the theme: Mathematics for a Better World.
The National Mathematics Day, which should have been celebrated on February 14, 2021, had to be moved to Wednesday, February 17, 2021, since February 14 fell on a Sunday.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed all regional and district directors of education to observe February 17 this year as National Mathematics Day in all first and second cycle schools across the country.
It reminded the directors of education that “the day is earmarked for only mathematics activities in our schools throughout the country”.
A letter dated February 8, 2021 to all regional directors of education signed by the Director of Schools and Instructions of the GES, Mrs Patty E. Assan, indicated that a national virtual durbar with stakeholders would be organised at the Science Education Unit in Accra alongside the regional and district school activities.
