PNG virus deaths climbed by 11 through Wednesday

Papua New Guinea s National Control Centre for Covid-19 reports the tally of people dying from the virus increased by 11 over the last 24 hours. While these 11 deaths are newly reported, the centre says they occurred from 19th March to 14th April. They take the PNG death tally from the virus to 82, with the National Capital District recording 56 of those. Australia boosts COVID-19 assistance

194 reads Australia is boosting its assistance to Papua New Guinea with the deployment of a second, larger team of health and medical specialists to respond to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases. According to the Australian High Commission in PNG, the 20 member Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) will provide expert support to Papua New Guinea’s National Control Centre for COVID-19 to help establish safe and effective systems to support the management of severe and critical cases. The team, which includes clinical specialists, will operate primarily from Port Moresby General Hospital, to address health workforce shortages and system gaps. This assistance is in response to a request from the PNG Government and recommendations made by an initial AUSMAT team, deployed on 23 March, 2021.

Australia boosts assistance for Papua New Guinea’s COVID-19 response Format 09 April 2021 Australia is working closely with the Government of Papua New Guinea to support its COVID-19 response, deploying a second team of health and medical specialists. An Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) of 17 specialists will depart on a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) flight today, to work with PNG’s National Control Centre for COVID-19 and provide supplementary expert advice to local health authorities. Australia has also procured an additional 40,000 GeneXpert rapid testing cartridges for PNG’s COVID-19 response, with 20,000 to be delivered to PNG next week. We are standing by our neighbour as they face these challenges, to save lives in PNG and to safeguard the health security of our region. As we work through global vaccine issues, we will continue to work with PNG to roll out vaccines in response to the priorities of the PNG Government.

Ok Tedi operations resume safely

BY: Loop Author 10:12, April 11, 2021 135 reads The Ok Tedi operations resumed safely on the 1st of April after a two-week suspension following a surge in COVID-19 cases at the company’s sites. The suspension was necessary to minimise the spread of the virus and to conduct mass testing of the workforce in order to allow the negative cases to return to work and to manage the positive cases. A total of 10,000 COVID-19 PCR swab samples were collected during the suspension period. This is in addition to more than 21,000 samples collected since the beginning of the year. OTML provides regular updates of its testing results to the National Control Centre.
