4 dead, over 42,000 affected by heavy rains, flooding in Sri Lanka Xinhua 16 May 2021, 02:05 GMT+10 COLOMBO, May 15 (Xinhua) At least four people had died and over 42,000 others had been affected by days of strong winds and heavy rains which lashed the country due to the formation of a super cyclone in the Bay of Bengal, Sri Lanka s Disaster Management Center (DMC) said in its latest weather report Saturday. According to the DMC, the deaths had been a result of severe flooding. Over 200 houses had been fully or partially damaged, while 175 people belonging to 42 affected families were housed in temporary shelters. The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) also issued a landslide warning for several districts in the country including the capital Colombo and the south. The NBRO requested people living in high-risk areas to move to safer grounds.

Give priority to health guidelines during this Vesak

Thursday, 13 May 2021 - 14:14 Releasing a statement, the Maha Nayakas of the Buddhist Chapters in Sri Lanka has requested the public to celebrate the Vesak Festival at home in view of the prevailing situation concerning COVID-19. They further added that it was essential to act according to the health guidelines issued without organizing events that gather crowds in and outside places of worship such as organizing alms, virtuous meditations, Vesak pandals, or any other festival. Meanwhile, the State Vesak Festival and the Buddhist Sermon programme which was scheduled to be held at the Nagadeepa Rajamaha Viharaya in Jaffna was cancelled by the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs.

WEATHER ALERT: Warnings issued for landslides and heavy rainfall

Share: COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka’s National Building Research Organization issued a Level 02 Landslide Early Warning for multiple areas in Galle and Kalutara Districts. The Level 02 Alert was issued for the Yakkalamulla, Elpitiya, Nagoda, Neluwa, Baddegama, Niyagama, and Thawalama Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Galle Districts. The Level 02 Alert was also issued for the Bulathsinhala, Mathugama, Ingiriya, Walallawita, Agalawatta, Dodangoda, Palindanuwara, and Horana Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Kalutara District. The announcement by the NBRO also added that people who live in other Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Kalutara, Beruwala, Millaniya, Madurawala, and Panadura should be vigilant in cutting failures in Kalutara District.
