The hype behind the gas industry s hydrogen push

, the majority of hydrogen is actually produced from fossil fuels: namely, methane (natural gas) and coal. Analysis shows that hydrogen is also currently inefficient and cost-prohibitive when compared with the approach to decarbonise the economy known as the electrification of everything, which would involve switching the majority of transportation and heating from burning fossil fuels to electricity produced increasingly by renewables. All of this hydrogen hype raises a lot of questions. What is hydrogen energy? Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe and can be used as a way to store and carry energy much like a battery which is why it is appealing as a way to replace burning fossil fuels for transportation, heat and power.

Why all the hoopla about hydrogen?

Well, humble hydrogen has suddenly become the hottest topic in energy circles around the globe. That’s because hydrogen’s simplicity and versatility can be applied to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across an ever-growing number of manufacturing and power segments, while also advancing the adoption and distribution of renewable energy. The relatively high cost of adding hydrogen into the value chain has some skeptics questioning just how extensive its role will be but supporters say economies of scale combined with a lot of government spending will lead to an energy system at least partially infused with hydrogen.

Today, I’m speaking with Jack Brouwer, who is a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering here at UCI. He’ss also the director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center, as well as the director of the Advanced Power and Energy Program, both of which are housed here at UCI.
