Speaker: Kadaga, Tayebwa defy NRM as they go independent

May 23, 2021 The NRM opted for Oulanyah over Kadaga Kamuli Woman MP Alitwala Rebecca Kadaga says she will defy her ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), and contest as an independent candidate in the race for the 11th parliament speaker. Kadaga told journalists at a hastily organized press conference at Hotel Africana that while her party has decided to field her former deputy, Jacob Oulanyah for the position, she will not heed to the position and therefore will exercise her right to run as an independent when parliament meets tomorrow to elect the speaker and deputy speaker.  Today, both the NRM central executive committee (CEC) and the party caucus resolved to field Oulanyah as the party s preferred candidate for speaker of the 11th parliament. With the completion of the swearing-in ceremony on May 12, 2021, Yoweri Museveni, aged 76, has begun his sixth consecutive term in the presidential office of Uganda.
