Red Cross Seeking Blood Donors, Anticipate Drop in Winter Donations
With their added push for blood donations in this critical time period, the Red Cross is also testing blood for Covid-19 antibodies.

DULUTH, Minn- It’s National Blood Donor Month and the Red Cross is continuing to look for extra support as they typically see a drop in donations around the winter months.
With their added push for blood donations in this critical time period, the Red Cross is also testing blood for Covid-19 antibodies.
They started doing this back in June and those antibodies will then be used to help treat Covid-19 patients.
(NBC News) – Blood banks nationwide are in a precarious position this January, National Blood Donor Month.
“We have about a two day supply right now,” says Dr. Claudia Cohn, Chief Medical Officer of the Association of American Blood Banks.
Between the holidays and inclement weather winter is typically a tough season. Now it’s compounded by the pandemic.
“We need everyone who can to go out and donate a unit of blood,” Dr. Cohn says. “We know that we’re asking a lot because everyone is exhausted. But we need you to just dig deep.”
That’s especially true in some of the hardest-hit areas, like Southern California.

With the holiday season behind us and maybe a bit more time on our hands, it’s time to think of how we can give back to our communities while filling our mid-winter days.
During National Blood Donor Month, we ask our readers to consider providing the life-saving gift of blood if they are able to, as this donation could make all the difference for a friend, neighbor or fellow Yooper.
While it’s always needed, donating blood is particularly critical at this juncture. The Upper Peninsula Regional Blood Center recently reported on its Facebook page that there was a severe blood shortage across the Upper Peninsula.
