MORGAN CO., Ala. (WAFF) - Officials with the Morgan County Sherriffâs Office say a corrections officer is now in the hospital after being injured by an inmate.
Mike Swafford with the Sherriffâs Office confirms Lemond Lawrence Burns attacked Officer Kathy Evans on April 19 when meals were being distributed.
According to a release from the Sheriffâs Office, inmate Burns asked to go on a smoke break. Officer Evans told Burns they would get to smoke breaks once meal time was over.

Judy Smith with the Alabama Department of Public Health says that if you want to get a vaccine, you can in Morgan County, but your only options right now are Pfizer and Moderna.
Morgan County corrections officer hospitalized after inmate attack

A Morgan County corrections officer was hospitalized Monday after she was attacked by an inmate, the sheriff’s office said.
The inmate attacked the officer at the Morgan County Jail as meals were being distributed, the office said.
The corrections officer was taken to Decatur Morgan Hospital and is in “good spirits,” according to the sheriff’s office.

What caused the incident is still unknown at this time.

A Morgan County inmate is facing new charges for assaulting a corrections officer.
The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office said at approximately 4:30 p.m. Monday, Corrections Officer Cathy Ann Evans was assisting with the distribution of evening meals at the time of the assault. It said federal inmate Lemond Lawerance Burns, 22, requested a smoke break, and Evans informed him they would get to smoke breaks once meal time was over.
