INEC Resumes Continuous Voters Registration June

By Chuks Okocha The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday announced dates for the resumption of the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR), which was suspended in 2017. The commission, however, ruled out making the National Identity Number (NIN) mandatory for the registration of voters. It also reiterated its determination to prosecute the Kogi State Governor, Mr. Yahaya Bello, for double registration. INEC National Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said at a news conference in Abuja that the registration would be done both manually and electronically. According to him, the exercise, will commence on June 28. Other dates for the exercise, he said, were for the expansion of voter access to polling units, to take place on May 11, while the building and testing of the online registration portal were scheduled for May 15.

  The Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise will resume on June 28 across the country, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the date for the resumption of the exercise on Thursday at a press briefing held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital. He disclosed that the electoral umpire has set aside the Direct Data Capture Machine, and would introduce a new device being developed by its in-house software engineers. Professor Yakubu explained that the new device – INEC Voter Enrolment Device (IVED) – was developed to be compatible with the android operating system.

Professor Yakubu said the exercise which will be conducted nationwide effective from June 28 will be carried out throughout this year and the third quarter of next year. He further hinted that the exercise would take off in Anambra State in view of the governorship election slated for November in the South-East state.
