Some contraceptive pills could be sold over the counter in the UK for the first time, the government has said.
It is asking the public for their views on whether two progestogen-only pills, also known as the mini-pill , should be available without prescription.
The move has been called a landmark opportunity in women s health that would improve access to contraception.
But there are also concerns about how much the pills would cost and how they would be given out.
Both contain desogestrel, which is a type of the hormone progesteron. At the moment it is only possible to get them on prescription from a doctor.

It may not have been easy to find things to look forward to in 2020, but with a new year comes new possibilities, right?
It is our pleasure to offer, in no particular order, a starter list of what’s to come in 2021.

The first photos and trailer (see below) are out for the sequel to the classic comedy “Coming to America,” and we’re ready.
Pregnant and breastfeeding women can take either of the two approved coronavirus vaccines “when the potential benefits outweigh the risks”, the UK’s medicines regulator said.
The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine can also now be administered to people with a wide range of food and medicines allergies, experts said at a Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) briefing.
However, people allergic to ingredients in the vaccine should not take it, MHRA chief executive Dr June Raine said.
And the interval between people receiving the first and second doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine has been increased to “at least” 21 days.
