11 Mayo beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status for 2021, while 6 Mayo beaches were given the Green Coast award.
Across the country, a record 93 Blue Flags for clean beaches and marinas have been awarded this year, an increase of two on last year, while there are 63 Green Coast awards.
The blue flag is a prestigious, international award assuring visitors that a beach has met minimum standards in water quality, facilities, safety, environmental education and management.
An Taisce has announced the awards today, with Donegal and Kerry leading the way again this year with 14 blue flags each, and Mayo has been awarded 11 blue flags.
As Ireland marks 100 years of independence, a tourist route is being dedicated to this 16th-century rebel.

Almost five centuries ago, an 11-year-old Irish girl pleaded with her father. Eager to emulate this intrepid, seafaring man, she begged to board his ship and join his next expedition. Her request was denied. The reason he gave: Her long red hair would get caught in the ship’s ropes.
The next time this captain saw his daughter, she was near bald. The brazen girl had shorn her own locks and was on her way to cutting a fresh path for Irish women. These were the first bold steps of a future pirate queen.

The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Thursday, 13th May) announced almost â¬1.1 million to support a range of capital works on our offshore islands.
Funding has been approved for Cork, Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal County Councils as follows:
