Caged farming - what s Ireland s position and what do our MEPs say?

June 9, 2021 4:33 pm Members of the European Parliament are scheduled to debate a motion this week (Thursday, June 10) related to a proposal to ban caged farming across Europe by 2027. The Agriculture and Rural Development Committee motion comes as a result of the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), End the Cage Age. This citizen-led campaign attracted close to 1.4 million signatures – more than 14,500 from Ireland – backing the call to remove, from farming, the remaining cages, farrowing crates, stalls and pens. Each year in the EU, about 300 million animals are reared in cages or individual stalls according to a report by Compassion in World Farming.

Lawyers against Frontex must be heard by Parliament s scrutiny working group

A legal action has been filed against Frontex for the first time in the EU border agency’s 17-year history over its human rights violations in the Aegean Sea. Earlier this week, a group of lawyers from Front-Lex, Progress Lawyers Network and Greek Helsinki Monitor made their submission to the EU Court of Justice over Frontex’s abuse. Left MEPs have welcomed this unprecedented and long overdue action. However, our request for the lawyers to be invited to present their case to the European Parliament’s Frontex Scrutiny Working Group have been repeatedly blocked by the liberal, conservative and far-right political groups. This request for the lawyers to give evidence will be decided this coming Monday (31/5/2021).

Probes, fines and disputes: Marking three years of GDPR

Probes, fines and disputes: Marking three years of GDPR Image: © mixmagic/Stock.adobe.com The regulation has been in force for three years but questions abound about effective enforcement with Ireland’s DPC in the spotlight. The General Data Protection Regulation, the EU’s equally vaunted and criticised data protection law, turns three years old today. GDPR came into force on 25 May 2018, promising a new age in privacy rights for Europeans. On paper, the legislation was a significant achievement but its enforcement since then has been tumultuous to say the least. Many proponents of the law focused in on the remit for issuing very large fines – up to 4pc of global turnover or €20m, whichever is higher – as a game changer and deterrent against lax compliance at companies, especially the larger tech firms.
