But is such a unification desirable, or even necessary?  In January 2020, RNZ Concert listeners were shellshocked to learn of plans to shift the classical music station to an AM frequency, and use its existing frequency to create a new, youth-focused station specifically targeting Māori and Pasifika listeners. A campaign protesting the proposal sprang up immediately, spearheaded by former Prime Minister Helen Clark. A petition along the same lines was signed by more than 25,000 people.
