Businesses in central Wellington are seeing the benefits of a major four-year upgrade of the capital’s gas pipelines, which was completed in May.
The upgrade was undertaken by gas distribution utility Powerco in partnership with its contractors Downer and Worley.
Powerco Gas Operations Manager Don Elers says the modernised gas network will better meet the needs of the growing city – particularly in the hospitality sector.
“We have around 1350 customers connected to the network we upgraded, many of whom rely on gas every day to keep things running – especially cafes, restaurants and hotels. The increasing demand for gas from our customers meant we needed to invest in further strengthening our infrastructure.
Their findings were echoed by Bayleys Hamilton branch manager Mike Gascoigne. “We’ve certainly seen a little bit of a slowdown over the last six to eight weeks,” he said. Gascoigne said that for a long period of time, they would see as many as six people battling for a property at auction. Now he said it’s three people at most. “The way the market was going at the time was unsustainable, we’re not surprised by a bit of a slowdown,” he said. In fact Gascoigne said he was still seeing investors active in the market “and hindering first time buyers”.

But District Mayor Ash Tanner said the rates are based on reality. “We are playing catch up from last year when we proposed a 6.4 per cent rate increase.” Instead council opted for a zero increase to general rates in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Matamata-Piako District Mayor Ash Tanner the increase in rates are based on reality. “I wouldn t like to put our ratepayers in a position in years to come facing 20 per cent increases, just to be popular,” Tanner said. “Our challenge is now to deliver on the projects ahead.” Over the next decade, council has approved some major projects for the district, including the Te Aroha Spa resort – its most significant approval at $18.9m –, additional water sources for Morrinsville, kerbside collection, resource recovery centres, revitalising town centres, a mountain bike skills and dog park for Te Aroha and a dog park for Matamata.
