Police groups sue over changes to Minnesota s deadly force law

Police groups sue over changes to Minnesota s deadly force law Say it violates officers rights to defend themselves. Posted: Jul 2, 2021 8:29 PM Updated: Jul 3, 2021 6:35 AM Posted By: Mike Bunge ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) A coalition of Minnesota’s largest law enforcement groups has sued the state to overturn a state law that changed the standard for justified use of deadly force by police. The lawsuit claims the law, which took effect in March, violates officers’ rights to self-defense and unconstitutionally compels officers to forfeit their rights to refuse to testify against themselves in deadly force cases. The law underwent a major rewrite following George Floyd’s death in the custody of four Minneapolis police officers last May.

Minnesota’s top Democratic and Republican lawmakers reached agreement on the highlights of a public safety bill that includes police accountability measures, a day after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison for the death of Floyd. While some details had yet to be finalized, leaders from both parties said the compromise reached late Saturday, June 26, 2021, settles the major issues after months of negotiations.
