South Bend school board Monday to consider redesign for two elementaries

SOUTH BEND — Board members of the South Bend Community School Corp. will consider plans Monday night to reform two underperforming elementary schools via a locally driven redesign plan that seeks to improve academic performance while keeping South Bend teachers in the schools. Administrators are targeting Marquette Montessori Academy and Muessel Elementary School for the redesign after both schools received five consecutive years of failing grades under the state’s A-F accountability grading system. The schools have not yet met the threshold for state intervention because of a pause taken in actions tied to school accountability due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, district leaders say they don’t want to wait until potential state takeover to take action.

South Bend program serving school-aged mothers could be cut

SOUTH BEND — South Bend educators and community members are coming to the defense of a longstanding program serving teen mothers after administrators unexpectedly announced its discontinuance last month. Wrapped into recommendations to close and restructure several other schools in a multiyear “right sizing” effort, South Bend Community School Corp. leaders called for the closure of the district’s School Age Mothers Program during a late January school board meeting. Shocked by the proposal, more than a dozen current and former staff, students and community members submitted letters in support of the program they say keeps students engaged at a time where the pressure to drop out couldn’t be greater.

Several legislators walked out of the chamber, GOP legislators in their seats booed and shouted “no” and “stop,” and some members even clashed in the halls after Black legislators spoke out against the bill.  The confrontations broke out on a day when Black members were celebrating Black History Month by wearing traditional African garb.
