Regional blood center seeks donations

Kathi Reed spent about 20 minutes Tuesday afternoon relaxing in a chair at the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center on South Virginia Street drinking a Coca-Cola while giving her one-pint donation. The Hopkinsville High School business teacher estimates she has donated about 5 gallons of blood at the center through the years. “It’s one of those things you can do to give back to your community,” she said. “There’s a lot of things people do — they give money, they give time. As a teacher I stay incredibly busy and give a lot of extra time to my students, but this is a way I can give back to the community at large.”

Man shot during robbery on East 19th Street

A man was shot around 7:55 p.m. Monday during a robbery while in the area of East Ninth Street, according to a Hopkinsville Police Department report. The report states Michael Henderson reported to police that while he was in the area of East 19th Street, he was robbed by two men wearing dark clothing and was then shot in the back. The suspects reportedly robbed Henderson of two gold necklaces and one silver necklace, worth a total of approximately $500, the report said. Henderson was treated for his injuries at Jennie Stuart Health where he later left against medical advice, the report added.

Churches plan in-person Christmas services

Most Kentucky churches were closed to in-person services at Easter after Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear restricted all mass gatherings in mid-March in an effort to protect public health because of the coronavirus pandemic. Just eight months later, several Hopkinsville worship centers will be hosting in-person Christmas-themed services, while following the state’s 50% capacity and social distancing restrictions. The Rev. Janet Carden, pastor of St. John United Methodist Church, said it was disheartening when the shutdown happened at Easter, a time when churches focus on the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. “We didn’t feel like it was Easter,” she said. “We decided right then that we were not going to let this happen again. We’re going to celebrate as much as we possibly can within the limits.”
