The Biden administration has given the green light to Vineyard Wind I, a project of 62 turbines to be built in waters off Rhode Island and Massachusetts that would be the first utility-scale offshore wind farm in America.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo was on the call with reporters Tuesday to announce final approval of the long-awaited $2.8-billion project that would be built between Block Island and Martha’s Vineyard, produce enough power for about 400,000 homes and go into operation in 2023. As Rhode Island governor, Raimondo oversaw construction of a five-turbine demonstration project off Block Island that in 2016 became the first offshore wind farm in the nation.

Avangrid executives say they expect federal regulators to issue a final decision on the Vineyard Wind offshore wind plan in coming days, and to be sending energy into Massachusetts in 2023 with the first truly utility-scale U.S. project.
In its 50/50 venture with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Avangrid has secured all major contracts for construction, including agreement with Foss Maritime to supply U.S. flag transport of components for installation offshore of southern New England by Belgium-based DEME Group’s wind turbine installation vessel.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Rhode Island coastal regulators, at the request of Gov. Daniel McKee, are delaying a key decision on an offshore wind farm to give the project developers more time to reach a compensation deal with the fishing industry.
The Providence Journal reports that the Coastal Resources Management Council was expected to consider a federal consistency certification at its meeting Thursday for the proposed South Fork Wind Farm of up to 15 turbines in Rhode Island Sound.
But with the possibility that the CRMC could recommend a denial of the certification, Orsted, the Danish company developing the project with utility Eversource, agreed to extend the deadline for a decision to June 1.
