Taoiseach Micheal Martin has expressed confidence the health service will have a sufficient number of medical professionals to administer Covid-19 vaccines, after significant numbers of retired health professionals offered assistance .
“I think we are in a confident position in terms of our capacity to vaccinate a critical mass of the population over the next number of months . At the end of quarter one , we should have about 1.1 million vaccines doses administered,” he said.

A 62-year-old man has been remanded in custody after he was charged with the murder of a mother of three whose body was found in a burning car in a forest in north Cork earlier this week.
Michael Leonard was brought amid tight security to a special sitting of Fermoy District Court at 11am where he was charged with the murder of Mary O’Keeffe (72).

A post-mortem examination has been carried out on the body of a woman found in a burnt-out car in Co Cork.
The remains of Mary O’Keeffe, who was in her 70s, were discovered in Doneraile on Thursday.
Her remains were discovered inside a car that was on fire in the area at around 4.30pm.
A search of the locality was carried out and a man was rescued by Gardaí from a nearby river.
A 62-year-old man was arrested last night on suspicion of unlawful killing - after being discharged from hospital.
He is being held at Fermoy Garda Station.

A surfer was rescued on Saturday afternoon after getting into difficulty off the west Cork coast.
The young man was in difficulty for almost 45 minutes about 1km offshore at Garrylucas Beach near the Old Head of Kinsale shortly after 4pm.
Courtmacsherry RNLI Voluntary Lifeboat Operations Manager, Brian O Dwyer said a lifeboat was launched within minutes.
“They proceeded at full speed to the area where the casualty was and they arrived there within 15 minutes – there was a rough sea and the casualty was being blown out to sea,” said Mr O’Dwyer.

The estate of British master builder Sidney V Regan has bequeathed â¬2 million to the department, helping to equip the universityâs new sound studio which will be officially opened on Tuesday.
